What is Ask A Queer Doctor?
Ask A Queer Doctor is a platform that I’ve created to talk with professionals about myths in their respective fields, with the aim to debunk them.
I’m launching this space because medicine and science were my first loves, and I think the field is often shrouded in mystery. Think about it, you can’t read academic papers unless you are subscribed to certain institutional sites, some articles are behind paywalls, and the ones you can read are sometimes written in inaccessible language. I want to talk about the body with no barriers, devoid of classist and often fatphobic notions of what healthy really is.
Here, I want to build a community of like-minded but curious individuals who love learning, who are queer or LGBTQ, and who are interested in covering topics that might be taboo or not talked about enough.
AAQD will run on a monthly basis, with main interviews appearing once a month and the occasional post just from me every couple of weeks. These interviews will focus on medicine and science, but we’ll also talk about how the doctor’s queer identity intersects with these fields. I’m asking a queer doctor because I am a lesbian, yes, but also because queer medical professionals are so important to the communities they serve.
Before I became a writer and editor, I wanted to be a neurologist. I wanted this because as a kid, I spent weeks in the hospital, going from specialist to specialist trying to figure out the root of what was wrong with me. It was a neurologist that gave me my final diagnosis and alleviated the dread I felt. Doctors have the power to do that, they can also do harm, but their main goal is to help. I want that knowledge they possess to be at your fingertips, to change your life like mine was changed.
I’m still working out interviews, but next week I’ll have a post up outlining the coming months of interviews that I’ve got in store for you. I hope you are as excited as I am!
